Sandy Heldmann's story
When I was about 16, I saw the movie “Love, Rosie,” in which the main character fulfills her dream and opens a hotel. That is when I realized that I wanted to work in a hotel someday.
After getting my A-level, I applied for a dual study program at the Mercure Hotel Cologne West. Three and a half years later, I had my bachelor’s degree in tourism management. Since I wanted to see something new, I applied to another hotel chain. However, I quickly realized that I missed the MKWest family and applied to come back. I worked in banquet service for a year and then moved to the Reservations department. I have now been the Deputy Reservations Manager for over year and a half.
If I have to say what is the best thing about working in the hotel industry, it is that you can reinvent yourself at any time if you want to. We as employees are encouraged and challenged, whilst being given opportunities to grow and build a career.
Looking back, my proudest moment is when I left MKWest after graduating and my current manager tried to persuade me to stay. That meant a lot to me as I truly felt seen and valued. After a few months with another employer, it felt like coming home. Later, being promoted to Deputy Reservations Manager, was also a highlight to me.
My advice to newcomers would be to take the opportunity to reinvent yourself. Sometimes the first stop is not the right one, but in the hotel industry in particular, it is possible to get to know and love different departments and roles. You just have to be open to it and then nothing is impossible.
