Technician, Mercure Strasbourg Centre Petite France (France)

Damien Kohler

Damien Kohler's story

I retrained to enter hospitality because I was looking for a new professional path that would offer more agreeable working hours than construction. Before joining the sector, I had built up a wide range of practical skills in building work, from painting, flooring and carpentry to plaster work, and that experience taught me the value of precision, adaptability and pride in a job well done. What I particularly enjoy today is the opportunity to organise my work, collaborate with different teams and groups, benefit from the possibilities that hospitality can offer, such as travel, and above all, spend my days working closely with people.

I would recommend the hospitality sector to anyone who is ambitious, curious and ready to give their best, because it is a field where there are many genuine opportunities to learn, grow and build a fulfilling career over time.

My proudest achievement so far has been taking part in the renovation of our bedrooms, which now feel warm, welcoming and much more in line with the experience we want to offer our guests. It is very rewarding to see the result of that work and to know that it helps create a better stay for the people who come through our doors. I also feel truly honoured to be a Heartist®, because it means being part of a cohesive team that shares the same sense of purpose and works together towards a common goal.

My advice to newcomers would be to take your job seriously from the very beginning, to be reliable and flexible, and to show real commitment in everything you do. Above all, I believe it is important to stay engaged and engaging, because hospitality is not only about technical skills; it is also about attitude, human connection and the energy we bring to others
